How do Naava green walls and plant furniture purify air?
Naava’s smart green walls and plant furniture biologically purify indoor air by removing harmful chemicals. The technology is based on a NASA-validated method in which microbes in plant roots break down airborne pollutants.
Up to 98% of a plant’s air-purifying effect takes place in the roots rather than the leaves. The core of Naava’s function lies in active air circulation and a soilless growing medium, which creates an optimal environment for the root-zone microbes that break down air pollutants. In this way, we harness plant microbes similarly to how wastewater treatment plants purify water. This process is called biofiltration.
The air-purifying performance of Naava has been verified in numerous scientific publications.
Why do Naava green walls and plant furniture include remote monitoring?
Unlike conventional decorative green walls, Naava is an active smart green wall that purifies air. It achieves this through nature, automation, and active air circulation. Because continuous airflow passes through Naava, the plants are placed under significant strain. To maintain optimal air-purifying performance, the plants require the right amount of water, nutrients, light, and rest at the right time. Automation and AI, together with a cloud-based system, manage and optimize these conditions through remote monitoring and control. This also ensures that the air produced by Naava remains as natural and pleasant as possible for building occupants. Environmental measurements are also taken to ensure, for example, appropriate humidity levels in the space.
Where are Naava green walls and plant furniture manufactured?
Naava is Finnish design, and the structural frames of our products are manufactured in Sievi, Finland. The plants come from our own greenhouse in the Netherlands.
What plants are used in Naava green walls?
Naava’s smart green walls feature common houseplants such as Philodendron hederaceum, Schefflera elegantissima, and Dracaena. The varieties are selected based on hypoallergenic properties, air-purifying efficiency, and durability. Many of the species we use are also listed among NASA’s most effective air-purifying plants. Over the years, we have studied more than 120 plant species and continue to test new ones. Our air-purification technology creates demanding conditions for plants, so only carefully selected species are used in Naava units. Nature is unpredictable, but through technology we aim to create stable and safe growing conditions.
Our plant selection includes around 10 species, from which our production team creates visually impressive plant compositions for each Naava unit.
Edible plants cannot be grown in Naava green walls.
How much electricity does Naava consume?
The estimated electricity cost of a Naava unit is around €1 per month.
What kind of space can a green wall be installed in?
Naava only requires a standard power outlet—nothing else. It should not be placed directly under an air exhaust vent, and the room temperature must not drop below 16°C.
Who takes care of Naava green walls and their plants? How often is a Naava green wall serviced?
Naava Service is responsible for the professional installation and maintenance of all Naava units. A maintenance agreement ensures that the units remain healthy and that their air-purifying performance stays optimal year-round. During installation, each Naava unit is registered in a remote monitoring system and prepared to operate under AI-based control. Maintenance is carried out at regular intervals and whenever needed. During each service visit, the service team trims and cleans the plants and ensures the proper functioning of the smart green wall.
Customers can choose between a premium maintenance plan and a standard service plan. The premium service includes regular refilling of water tanks. Some customers prefer to handle this themselves or include it in their cleaning service agreement, in which case the standard maintenance plan is sufficient.
Why does the maintenance team use masks and protective equipment?
Naava maintenance technicians wear respiratory protection, gloves, protective clothing, and safety glasses. These are used to protect them from repeated exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals (such as plant protection agents, cleaning agents, and nutrients), as well as plant-derived particles during service work.
Are Naava green wall plants safe and allergy-friendly?
It is important to us that everyone can enjoy Naava regardless of allergies or sensitivities, and we therefore aim to minimize allergy risks by all means possible. Allergies are immune system reactions that can, in principle, be triggered by many environmental factors, so we cannot guarantee that plants will never cause allergic reactions. However, the plants we use are common, widely used houseplants that do not typically flower indoors and therefore do not produce allergenic pollen.
In addition, Naava Service ensures through regular maintenance visits that the units do not produce allergenic pollen, spores, or odors.
It is very rare for typical houseplants themselves to cause allergic symptoms. More commonly, symptoms are caused by mold in conventional potting soil. Naava plants grow in a soilless growing medium where mold cannot form. This allows greenery to be introduced even into spaces where traditional soil-based plants have previously caused issues.
Naava plants are not toxic, but they are not edible and edible plants cannot be grown in Naava units.
Can you touch a Naava green wall?
Yes, Naava green walls can be touched, and brown leaves may be carefully removed with clean, sharp scissors. However, Naava units should not be moved by customers unless they are equipped with a designated wheeled base. Moving a unit between buildings or spaces should always be carried out by Naava Service.
