Naava's driving emissions in Finland to drop by 90 %
Low-emission maintenance: Naava is switching to using Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ fuel in its Finnish maintenance operations!
At the end of 2022, Naava made the decision to switch to low-emission Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ fuel made 100 % from waste and residues for its Finnish maintenance operations. With this change, Naava's carbon footprint from its Finnish maintenance drives will be reduced by up to 90 % on average over the entire life cycle of the fuel, compared to the use of fossil diesel. The life cycle emissions and emission reduction calculation methods are in accordance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive II (2018/2001/EU). The change came into effect at the beginning of 2023. This low-emission diesel is suitable for almost all of Naava's Finnish maintenance vehicles, so the change to our carbon footprint will be significant. Naava's staff is committed to the change, and all fueling carried out by Naava Service should be done using Neste MY Renewable Diesel.
Neste MY Renewable Diesel is based on Neste's NEXBTL technology, which converts a wide range of fats and oils into top-quality fuels (Source: Neste). Switching to this renewable fuel is an important step in achieving the company's sustainable development goals. As a result of the change, the emissions from Naava's own operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2) are expected to decrease by up to 25% in 2023.
“Climate goals are achieved through partnerships and we are happy that Naava is leading the way in their industry. With Neste MY Renewable Diesel Naava is able to reduce its carbon footprint quickly, with no need for additional investments on the fleet. Renewable diesel is an easy way to turn sustainability goals into actions and with Neste MY Carbon Footprint -service, Naava can also follow and measure their reduced greenhouse gas emissions.”

Naava's maintenance operations were already relatively clean, which is due to Naava's active utilization of its own technologies. Naava's green walls automatically optimize their own living space so that the plants have the best possible conditions to stay healthy. In addition, Naava has the ability to remotely manage and monitor the condition of its green walls. Due to these features, Naava's maintenance intervals are significantly longer than those of normal green walls, which means that significantly fewer maintenance-related kilometres are accumulated per product. According to Naava's own calculation, this feature results in 30 kilograms of CO2 emissions savings per customer per year.
In addition to these measures, we actively work on route optimization, among other things, to improve our efficiency and minimize the environmental impact of our physical maintenance work. We now want to make our actual driven kilometres even cleaner, which is why we saw Neste's solution as the best option. Due to the requirements of our maintenance work, switching to electric cars is not yet a realistic option for us, and with Neste's solution, we can achieve significant emissions savings already this year. In addition to the fuel change, we'll also take into use Neste MY Carbon Footprint reporting service, which supports us to follow our use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel and the reduced emissions.
"At Naava, we are constantly seeking new and innovative solutions to develop our business. Recently, we have focused especially on further developing the sustainability of our operations. Therefore, the decision to switch to Neste MY Renewable Diesel was a natural change for us, which will quickly achieve significant progress in reducing our company's carbon footprint. I believe that this change will serve as a strong inspiration for our future sustainability projects."
